Best Caribbean Islands for New Year’s Eve

1. British Virgin Islands (BVI): Best Overall

The BVI is a favorite for New Year’s Eve, especially if you want to celebrate on the water. Foxy’s Old Year’s Night on Jost Van Dyke draws a big crowd, but you can also find quieter anchorages and beach celebrations around the islands.

  • Signature Celebration: Foxy’s Old Year’s Night in Great Harbour, Jost Van Dyke
  • Where to be at Midnight: Foxy’s for the big stage and live bands, or North Sound for fireworks/drone show
  • Other Options: Leverick Bay, Virgin Gorda for kid-friendly parties, and Cane Garden Bay, Tortola for a beach with fireworks
  • Our Tip: Experience Foxy’s Old Year’s Night at least once. It’s wild, and not a family-friendly night.

Sailing Tip: Take a mooring or anchor in Little Harbour or Little Jost Van Dyke and grab a taxi to Foxy’s instead of staying in White Bay or Great Harbour.

2. US Virgin Islands (USVI): Best Easy Trip

The USVI is an easy starting point for a Caribbean holiday, with no passport required for US citizens, beaches across three islands, and a lively holiday festival on St. Croix. You can also pair St. Thomas with a trip to the nearby BVI.

  • Signature Celebration: St. Croix’s Crucian Christmas Festival (Carnival)
  • Where to be at Midnight: Festival Village, Frederiksted
  • Other Options: Charlotte Amalie’s waterfront on St. Thomas; or Cruz Bay, St. John
  • Our Tip: Experience J’ouvert on New Year’s Eve morning at least once. It’s super early morning, and worth it!

3. St. Martin / Sint Maarten: Best for Variety

St. Martin and Sint Maarten offer several ways to ring in the new year, from waterfront fireworks and beach bars on the Dutch side to multi-course dinners and upscale beach clubs on the French side. It’s a good choice for groups who want different options without changing islands.

  • Signature Celebration: Great Bay Beach fireworks
  • Where to be at Midnight: Beach or boardwalk in Philipsburg
  • Other Options: Multi-course dinner in Grand Case; beach club scene in Orient; or beach bar parties at Maho Bay
  • Our Tip: Visit Maho Beach to watch the planes come in low over the beach

Excursion Tip: Take a day trip to Anguilla for picture-perfect beaches

Antigua is a good fit for sailors and anyone who enjoys historic harbors. New Year’s Eve brings the traditional Nelson’s Pursuit Race, while English Harbour and Nelson’s Dockyard offer a scenic setting for celebrating ashore.

  • Signature Celebration: Nelson’s Pursuit Race on December 31
  • Where to be at Midnight: English Harbour and Nelson’s Dockyard

5. St. Barthélemy (St. Barths): Best for Luxury & Glamour

St. Barths is the Caribbean’s glamorous side of New Year’s Eve. Superyachts gather in Gustavia Harbor, the waterfront is a natural place to watch the celebrations, and upscale restaurants and beach clubs make this a popular choice for a special-occasion trip.

  • Where to be at Midnight: Waterfront in Gustavia
  • Other Options: Exclusive beach club parties at St. Jean
  • Our Tip: Take an excursion to Île Fourchue

Good to know: It’s very pricey, and some parties are invite only.

6. Barbados: Best for Street Parties and Nightlife

Barbados is the place for lively street parties. Holetown’s First and Second Street area fills with people, music, and fireworks on New Year’s Eve, and the east coast is perfect to watch the first sunrise of the year.

  • Other Options: Harbour Lights’ NYE party or Sandy Lane’s upscale New Year’s Eve gala, with dinner and fireworks
  • Our Tip: Watch the sunrise over the Atlantic at Bathsheba on the wild east coast

7. The Bahamas: Best for Parades

For a New Year’s celebration rooted in Bahamian culture, plan around Junkanoo. Nassau’s elaborate costumes, drums, and street parades bring a big dose of energy to the holiday, particularly in the early hours of New Year’s Day.

  • Signature Celebration: Nassau’s Junkanoo parade on New Year’s Day (starts around 2 am)
  • Where to be at Midnight: At (or view of) Atlantis Resort on Paradise Island
  • Other Options: The Bahamas has hundreds of islands spanning 760 miles, so the options can be endless!
  • Our Tip: Build in beach time. The water is some of the most beautiful in the world.

Weather note: The Bahamas sits farther north than most Caribbean destinations on this list, so winter cold fronts can bring cooler, breezy weather. Daytime temperatures are often comfortable, but some evenings can dip into the low 60s°F (15-17°C).

8. Turks & Caicos: Best for Beach Fireworks

Turks & Caicos has beautiful beaches year-round, but New Year’s Eve adds a lively street party and fireworks over Grace Bay. It’s a good choice if you want a beach-focused holiday without giving up the midnight celebrations.

  • Where to be at Midnight: Grace Bay Beach for synchronized resort fireworks
  • Other Options: Stay off Providenciales for a more laid-back New Year’s celebration
  • Our Tip: Spend a day at Sapodilla Bay beach.

9. Puerto Rico: Best for Traditional NYE Celebration

Puerto Rico is the pick for a more traditional celebration with Caribbean weather. San Juan has concerts, fireworks, and nightlife on New Year’s Eve, with no passport needed for US citizens and direct flights from across the US

10. Aruba: Best for Drier Winter Weather

Aruba is one of the driest, sunniest islands in the Caribbean, so it’s a reliable pick if you don’t want to gamble on the weather. Local traditions add to the celebration, including pagara firecrackers on December 31 and Dande singers sharing blessings for the new year.

Planning Your New Year’s Eve Trip

Getting Around and Booking Ahead

New Year’s Eve is one of the busiest times of year in the Caribbean, so book flights, accommodations, and boat charters early.

If you’re visiting the British or US Virgin Islands, plan your ferry connections ahead of time. Ferries run extended hours on New Year’s Eve, but check the holiday timetable and reserve your tickets in advance. Check current ferry times here.

For island-hopping trips, remember that St. Barths is reached by commuter flight or ferry from St. Martin, while Anguilla and Barbuda require additional planning for day trips. Confirm schedules and entry requirements before you book your itinerary.

If you’re hoping for a last-minute deal, availability and prices can go either way. Some properties sell out early, while others may have rooms left closer to the holiday. You may get lucky!

What to Pack

The Caribbean is still warm, so skip the heavy coats and sweaters. In the northern islands like the Bahamas and Turks & Caicos, pack a light layer, especially if you plan to spend the evening outdoors.

  • Beach clothes for the day
  • Dressier outfits for resort dinners and galas
  • Costumes or comfortable festive clothes for street parties
  • No heels: Skip them in most of the Caribbean, where surfaces can be uneven. The exception is the ultra-luxury resort galas
  • REAL ID-compliant license, or passport, for US citizens flying to the USVI or Puerto Rico. Passports for all other islands and for ferries between the USVI and BVI.

Weather & Sea Conditions

Winds can be stronger in late December, so be ready for breezy beach days and bumpy ferry rides. Most rides are short, but bring motion sickness medication and take it ahead of time. A cold front from the north can mean bigger waves at some beaches.

Budget

Puerto Rico has the widest range of hotel prices, including more budget-friendly options. Sint Maarten also has a lot of variety of accommodations and activities which can help you pick and choose where to spend and where to splurge. At the top end is St. Barts; you can spend several thousand dollars a night.

New Year’s is peak season across much of the Caribbean, so even the more affordable destinations can cost more than they do at other times of year.
