How to Choose the Right Island for Christmas

Weather. The Caribbean is warm year-round, but it’s larger than most people realize. The southern islands run slightly warmer than the northern ones.

Travel style. Your style of travel makes a big difference. Are you traveling with family, looking for all-inclusives, festivals, beaches, romance, or sailing?

Passport needs. Two islands on this list, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, do not require a passport for U.S. citizens.

Booking early. Christmas week is one of the top travel weeks of the year, and it sells out early. Many people book close to a year ahead, and prices are always up. We’re down to the wire for 2026, so book sooner rather than later.

10 Best Caribbean Islands to Visit for Christmas

1. British Virgin Islands (BVI): Best Overall

The BVI is our favorite place in the Caribbean, and Christmas here is at its best on a sailing vacation.

Why a Christmas sailing week works. Instead of hotel rooms, you get a floating villa. On a crewed yacht charter, it feels like coming into a home.

You don’t need to be a sailor or know anything about sailing to love it. The crew handles all the details while you relax.

It still feels like Christmas, too. Your crew can decorate for you, prepare holiday meals, clean up, and plan your excursions.

Why families love it. So many moms have told us this was the first vacation where they truly felt off. The crew handles the day-to-day, from making sure everyone has their shoes in the dinghy and their snorkel gear ready, to keeping snacks available and an eye on the kids, so mom can sit and read a book. Or better yet, focus her energy on just playing with the family!

The distances between islands are short, so you’re anchored in a cove with plenty to do in no time.

  • Swimming right off the boat
  • Beach time
  • Kayaks, paddle boards, and other water toys at your fingertips
  • Your hotel room goes with you, and so do your excursions

Your Christmas, your way. Your crew can bring as much or as little holiday spirit as you want. If a land-based trip is more you’re style, check out Rosewood Little Dix Bay or Scrub Island Resort.

We have spent several Christmases in the BVI and keep coming back for more.

2. St. Lucia: Best for Romance

St. Lucia always the romantic setting, with incredible views of the Pitons.

  • Candlelit dinners
  • Resorts that host their own Christmas events
  • A Festival of Lights in mid-December

One caveat. While December is the dry season, at the mountaintop resorts on higher islands like St. Lucia, small passing showers are possible. They’re usually quick, they come in the heat of the day and make for a nice refreshing cooldown.

3. Puerto Rico: Best for Christmas Traditions

Puerto Rico has one of the longest and richest Christmas celebrations in the Caribbean.

  • The holiday season runs from November through mid-January
  • Parrandas, Puerto Rico’s version of caroling late at night
  • Old San Juan is super festive, with holiday decor and lights everywhere
  • Incredible holiday food, including creamy coquito, savory lechón, and mouth-watering pasteles
  • No passport needed for U.S. citizens, with many flights from around the U.S. direct into San Juan

4. Turks & Caicos: Best for Calm, Shallow Beaches

Turks and Caicos has some of the most beautiful beaches in the Caribbean, and plenty of calm, shallow spots for small children.

  • Grace Bay Beach holiday festivities and street parade
  • Protected beaches like Sapodilla Bay
  • Sits a bit farther north, so Atlantic cold fronts can affect the north-facing beaches
  • Temperatures in the 70s to low 80s℉ (21-28℃)

5. Anguilla: Best for Quiet Beaches and Beach-Bar Dining

Anguilla is postcard-perfect beaches, one after another.

Every beach around the island is beautiful, with white sand and bright blue water. It looks a lot like Turks and Caicos, but it sits farther south.

  • Many resorts and beach bars host holiday parties and live music
  • Low-key beaches (December can bring larger waves)
  • A strong food scene, with great restaurants all over the island
  • A short ferry ride to St. Martin, so you can make it a day trip

6. U.S. Virgin Islands (USVI): Best Easy Trip

No passport is required for U.S. citizens, and travel is simple. Puerto Rico is also an easy trip when it comes to flights and passports. The difference here is that English is the primary language.

  • St. Croix has an annual Christmas boat parade and the Crucian Christmas Festival
  • St. Thomas, a great spot to fly in when pairing with a BVI trip, with sailing charters available here too
  • St. John is perfect for nature lovers, with fantastic snorkeling, hiking, and beaches

7. Jamaica: Best All-Inclusive

Jamaica has all-inclusive resorts at many different price levels, plus music that gives Christmas an upbeat island feel.

  • Christmas markets, parades, and festivals
  • Reggae Christmas carols
  • A Jamaican-style holiday feast, with sorrel, a spiced drink often made with ginger and rum
  • Hurricane Melissa recovery is ongoing, with Negril largely reopened and Montego Bay still rebuilding

Visiting an island that’s rebuilding from a devastating hurricane is a great way to support the economy.

8. Grenada: Best for Local Festivals

Grenada, the Spice Island, brings its own local Christmas traditions. We got to celebrate the 2025 holiday season in Grenada and loved when the school kids came caroling through the streets!

  • On Carriacou, part of the country of Grenada, the Parang Festival is in December, with traditional Christmas caroling
  • Spice Island character, and nutmeg is the holiday smell back home, so here you’re where it actually comes from
  • The long stretch of Grand Anse Beach and rainforest adventures
  • Festive lights and Christmas music in a calypso and soca style, so you still get the Christmas feel with a Caribbean vibe

9. Barbados: Best for a Festive, Social Christmas

Barbados is lively and social at Christmas, with British traditions and a Bajan flair.

  • Christmas morning in Queen’s Park in Bridgetown, where people gather in their finest outfits
  • Boxing Day horse races
  • Bajan cuisine, with traditional dishes and more sorrel
  • Part of the warmest, southern Caribbean

10. St. Vincent & the Grenadines: Best for a Lesser-Known Escape

St. Vincent and the Grenadines is lesser known than most islands on this list, with a small-town feel and a slower pace.

  • Nine Mornings, a festival of pre-dawn gatherings where locals join in concerts, caroling, and other cultural activities
  • A unique experience for travelers who want to be surrounded by Caribbean culture
  • Bequia, a favorite place for sailors to spend Christmas

Also Consider: The Bahamas, Antigua, and Aruba

The Bahamas. Junkanoo is the big draw, with beach festivities on Boxing Day. Keep in mind the Bahamas sit farther north, so they’re affected by weather coming down from the North Atlantic and run a little cooler.

Antigua. Antigua has 365 beaches, one for every day of the year, and a busy sailing scene. Friends who spent the holidays in English Harbour told us it’s a super fun scene for sailors and history buffs.

Aruba. Aruba is reliably sunny and dry, with fireworks, music, and open-air festivities across the island in December.

Is the Caribbean Hot at Christmas?

The short answer is yes. It’s very warm, sunny, and comfortable, and the lowest rainfall of the year begins as the dry season starts in December.

Daytime temperatures usually range from the low to mid-80s°F (27–29°C), with slightly cooler evenings in the 70s°F (21–26°C).

We always like to have a light layer for the breeze in the evenings.

The Christmas Winds

One thing that surprises people is the Christmas winds. Most of the Caribbean sees stronger trade winds starting in mid-December and running through about March.

Winds upwards of 30 mph can occur. West-side beaches on each island are calmer and less affected.

The Christmas winds don’t change the rainfall or the sunshine, but plan your beach days with them in mind.

Sea Temperatures

The sea stays warm in December, but it varies by location. In the north, around Turks and Caicos, expect the high 70s°F (25–26°C).

In the Virgin Islands it’s right around 80°F, and in the southern Caribbean it’s in the low 80s°F (27–28°C).

Where is the Warmest Place in the Caribbean in December?

The southern islands run the warmest: Grenada, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Barbados, and especially Aruba.

The Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, and Anguilla sit right in between the southern and northern islands.

The northern islands, such as Turks and Caicos and especially the Bahamas, see cooler temperatures. When we say cooler, we mean the 70s°F (25–26°C) instead of the 80s°F (27–28°C), so it’s still tropical.

Tips for Booking a Caribbean Christmas Trip

Book six to nine months ahead. That’s the usual window for Christmas trips because it’s prime vacation time. Since we’re already inside that window, don’t wait. Charter boats and sought-after hotels can fill up fast, and many start taking holiday bookings a year in advance. There are still availability if you act now!

Expect peak pricing. Christmas to New Year’s is the most expensive stretch of the year. If you don’t want to pay full holiday prices, consider early December, which is still shoulder season, so you can find great deals.

Check minimum-night rules and mandatory dinners. At resorts and hotels, holiday dinners are often mandatory, which means you pay for them even if you choose to eat somewhere else. Charters often have minimum nights and holiday meals included in the price too.

Remember your passport. Most islands on this list require one. Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands do not for U.S. citizens flying in, but a REAL ID is still required for all U.S. travelers to board flights.
