Planning Your New Year’s Eve Trip
Getting Around and Booking Ahead
New Year’s Eve is one of the busiest times of year in the Caribbean, so book flights, accommodations, and boat charters early.
If you’re visiting the British or US Virgin Islands, plan your ferry connections ahead of time. Ferries run extended hours on New Year’s Eve, but check the holiday timetable and reserve your tickets in advance. Check current ferry times here.
For island-hopping trips, remember that St. Barths is reached by commuter flight or ferry from St. Martin, while Anguilla and Barbuda require additional planning for day trips. Confirm schedules and entry requirements before you book your itinerary.

If you’re hoping for a last-minute deal, availability and prices can go either way. Some properties sell out early, while others may have rooms left closer to the holiday. You may get lucky!
What to Pack
The Caribbean is still warm, so skip the heavy coats and sweaters. In the northern islands like the Bahamas and Turks & Caicos, pack a light layer, especially if you plan to spend the evening outdoors.
- Beach clothes for the day
- Dressier outfits for resort dinners and galas
- Costumes or comfortable festive clothes for street parties
- No heels: Skip them in most of the Caribbean, where surfaces can be uneven. The exception is the ultra-luxury resort galas
- REAL ID-compliant license, or passport, for US citizens flying to the USVI or Puerto Rico. Passports for all other islands and for ferries between the USVI and BVI.

Weather & Sea Conditions
Winds can be stronger in late December, so be ready for breezy beach days and bumpy ferry rides. Most rides are short, but bring motion sickness medication and take it ahead of time. A cold front from the north can mean bigger waves at some beaches.

Budget
Puerto Rico has the widest range of hotel prices, including more budget-friendly options. Sint Maarten also has a lot of variety of accommodations and activities which can help you pick and choose where to spend and where to splurge. At the top end is St. Barts; you can spend several thousand dollars a night.
New Year’s is peak season across much of the Caribbean, so even the more affordable destinations can cost more than they do at other times of year.
